The Star Barn, located just outside Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, was built in 1872 by John Motter, a self-made man, who began work as a saddler, and progressed to raising horses, and furnished the United States Army with thousands of mounts. Mr. Motter's stars served as more than beautiful decoration - they were made of wood louvers that provided additional light and important air circulation for the drying of hay and other grains.
